COMPOUNDING

What in Compounding?

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medications for patients. Its practice dates back to the origins of pharmacy. Compounded medications are “made from scratch” – individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. This method allows the compounding pharmacist to work with the patient and the prescriber to customize a medication to meet the patient’s specific needs.

What We Do

Low T in Men and Women

In the same way that women experience hormonal changes, men undergo a comparable process known as andropause, characterized by a decrease in testosterone levels. Although the effects of male menopause generally occur more gradually, they can still be quite significant. Moreover, this is not an issue that affects only men. As women age and their levels of estrogen and progesterone decline, they may also experience a reduction in testosterone.

Signs of low testosterone may include:

  • Reduced bone density (osteoporosis)
  • Decrease in muscle mass
  • Problems with erectile function
  • Skin becoming thinner
  • Tiredness, reduced stamina, and lack of motivation
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Diminished sexual desire
  • Difficulties with memory or concentration
  • Elevated total cholesterol levels
  • Increased body fat

Testosterone is vital to the overall health of both men and women. It helps support energy production, immune function, and cognitive clarity, while also contributing to the development and maintenance of muscle mass and strength. In addition, it plays a key role in sexual desire, bone health, cholesterol regulation, body fat reduction, and emotional well-being.

In modern life, the rapid tempo and high expectations of work, family, and social responsibilities place significant stress on many people. Rather than releasing cortisol briefly to manage short-term stress and then returning to normal levels, the body continues to produce increasing amounts of this hormone in response to ongoing pressures and concerns. As a result, cortisol remains elevated throughout the day. Although many assume that excess cortisol is the primary reason for weight gain, our findings suggest the opposite. When prolonged stress and persistently high cortisol levels last for many years, the adrenal glands can become overworked from constant hormone production. This condition is known as adrenal fatigue.

Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue include:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Low blood sugar
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness upon standing
  • Muscle and/or joint pain
  • Recurrent infections
  • Allergies and/or asthma
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Low libido
  • Hair loss
  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Difficulty coping with stress

Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands and is best known for its role in the body’s stress response. It is released when the body perceives a threat, triggering the fight-or-flight mechanism.

Hormone Deficiency in Menopause

Whether menopause occurs naturally or as a result of surgical removal of the uterus, the sharp reduction and eventual loss of estrogen and progesterone can cause numerous symptoms and negatively affect a woman’s quality of life. While most women are aware that estrogen levels decline during menopause, it is less commonly recognized that progesterone deficiency produces symptoms similar to those experienced with premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Symptoms of Estrogen Deficiency include:

  • Hot Flashes
  • Night Sweats
  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Sleep Disturbances
  • Foggy Thinking
  • Incontinence
  • Thinning Skin
  • Osteoporosis

Estrogens are crucial for maintaining bone strength, supporting heart and blood vessel health, regulating reproductive functions, and helping to preserve cognitive function. The body naturally produces three types of estrogen: estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3). Among these, estrone is the most biologically powerful.

Estrogen Dominance and PMS

Although PMS is often considered a normal part of being female, its symptoms can be both prevented and managed naturally without medication. These symptoms are usually caused by a lack of progesterone, a condition commonly referred to as estrogen dominance.

Signs of Progesterone Deficiency (also known as Estrogen Dominance) may include:

  • Breast swelling/tenderness
  • Headaches
  • Mood swings
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Abnormal menstrual cycles
  • Bloating
  • Weight gain (particularly around the waist and hips)

Progesterone helps counterbalance the effects of estrogen and contributes to the well-being of the skin, hair, bones, heart, and brain, but its primary function is to support pregnancy and allow a fetus to develop fully. It is a remarkable hormone that, much like estrogen, influences virtually every cell in the body.

When progesterone is properly balanced with other hormones in the body, it can offer a range of benefits, such as:

  • Cancer protection: helps lower the risk of breast cancer
  • Musculoskeletal health: supports bone formation and strength
  • Neurological well-being: helps reduce anxiety and depression, promotes better sleep, stabilizes mood, and eases headaches

Low Thyroid (Hypothyroidism)

When people think about an underactive thyroid, they typically associate it with weight gain and a slow metabolism, which are classic signs of the condition. Nevertheless, hypothyroidism can impact every system in the body.

Symptoms of Thyroid Hormone Deficiency (Hypothyroidism) include:

  • Persistent low energy or exhaustion
  • Feeling unrefreshed even after a full night of sleep
  • Trouble losing weight despite efforts
  • Mental cloudiness or “brain fog”
  • Problems with focus and short-term memory
  • Fluid buildup in the body
  • Swollen or puffy facial appearance
  • Increased cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Heightened sensitivity to cold temperatures
  • Chronic constipation
  • Dry skin and fragile nails
  • Thinning or loss of hair
  • Aching muscles and joints
  • Lower-than-normal resting body temperature
  • Thinning of hair at the outer edges of the eyebrows
  • Frequent or recurring infections

The thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) play a key role in controlling the body’s metabolic processes. T4 is considered the inactive form of thyroid hormone and needs to be converted into T3 in order to exert its effects.

Extending Healthspan: Living Longer and Enjoying Better Health

Healthspan refers to a longer life accompanied by enhanced cellular function, greater vitality, and a higher overall quality of life.

Healthspan = Longer Life + Optimized Well-Being

COMPOUNDS FOR LONGEVITY

Sirolimus, more commonly known as rapamycin, is widely regarded by many doctors and researchers as one of the most powerful tools for promoting healthy aging and extending longevity.

Originally discovered in soil samples from Easter Island (Rapa Nui), from which its name is derived, rapamycin was first recognized for its antifungal and antibacterial effects. Subsequent research revealed its potential to prolong lifespan through its role as a potent mTOR inhibitor.

mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin) is a central regulator of cellular metabolism that influences aging, lifespan, and the development of age-related diseases. When mTOR activity is not properly balanced, chronic illness and visible signs of aging are more likely to occur.

Regular inhibition of mTOR is essential for supporting autophagy, the body’s natural process of cellular repair and recycling. By stimulating autophagy, sirolimus enhances cellular detoxification and helps slow down the aging process.

Documented potential benefits of low-dose sirolimus include:

  • Boosts energy levels, often beyond baseline
  • Enhances overall outlook and emotional well-being
  • Eases joint discomfort
  • Lowers inflammation throughout the body
  • Sharpens mental focus and clarity
  • Supports better quality sleep
  • Promotes healthier skin

Mitochondrial Optimization

Compounded methylene blue capsules

Methylene blue, initially developed as a textile dye and later used for its antimalarial properties, has become a critical medication in emergency departments for reversing methemoglobinemia. However, its significance extends far beyond this use—it is also the origin of the term “magic bullet.”

Methylene blue supports the activity of the electron transport chain, helping to optimize mitochondrial respiration and enhance cellular ATP energy production. It also helps counteract the harmful effects of excess nitric oxide and impaired mitochondrial function, offering antioxidant protection for both the brain and the body.

Chronic pain affects over 1.5 billion people worldwide, yet many traditional pain management drugs come with adverse systemic side effects that contribute to poor patient compliance and sub-optimal therapeutic outcomes. Topical and local analgesic applications have been shown to be efficacious and can reduce adverse events, improve patient outcomes, and reduce opioid use.

Often, pediatric patients will need their medications in a different form or flavors. Our compounding formulations can provide the same medication in a cream base for topical application or in a syrup for easier oral administration. We can also change flavors to make them more palatable and aesthetically pleasing such as gummy bears, lollipops, freezer pops, as well as topical cremes.

An imbalanced gut can weaken your immune system, increase the risk of illness, and influence your mental well-being. When your gut is healthy, your digestive system maintains a proper balance of beneficial bacteria and can effectively break down and absorb nutrients, as well as certain medications, including hormones.

When this balance is disrupted, it can lead to mental symptoms such as brain fog and irritability, which is why the gut is often referred to as the “second brain.” Limiting sugar and processed foods and drinking alcohol in moderation can support gut health, as can incorporating probiotics and fermented foods that nourish beneficial bacteria. In many cases, a candida or yeast-free diet is also suggested to help restore a healthy microbial balance in the gut.

A strong immune system protects the body from illness and infection. However, ongoing stress, inadequate nutrition, and poor sleep habits can weaken immune function, often leading to symptoms such as frequent infections, persistent fatigue, and digestive problems.

An autoimmune condition develops when the immune system mistakenly targets and damages healthy tissues in the body. There are over 80 recognized autoimmune diseases, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Lyme disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. The main objective in managing autoimmune disorders is to regulate the body’s immune and inflammatory responses.

Sexual dysfunction affects a significant number of both men and women. It may stem from physical issues or medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease and hormonal imbalances, as well as psychological factors such as anxiety, depression, or past trauma. Treatment approaches typically focus on improving problems related to sexual desire, arousal, and orgasm for both sexes.

Please contact us to speak with a pharmacist about sexual health protocols, including additional options beyond those listed below.

As women age, hormone levels can destabilize and lead women to experience chronic symptoms and disorders that disrupt daily life. Common symptoms include weight gain, hot flashes, migraines, depression, difficulty sleeping, loss of libido, and fatigue. With a careful and complete medical history evaluation, we can produce a variety of product alternatives to mitigate the effect of these disruptive symptoms.

Men are also affected by hormone imbalance as they age. Decreases in men’s testosterone levels can lead to condition called “andropause” which is more commonly known as “Low-T.” Common symptoms include decreased concentration, lethargy, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, and depression among the more commonly known side effects. Compounding medications offer supplemental testosterone formulations for oral or topical application that helps men recapture their youthful vigor.

Commercially available products often come in a limited variety of strengths. A compounding pharmacist offers individualized treatment with precisely formulated medication strength using a variety of delivery mechanisms such as topical creams, ointments, foams and shampoos. The active ingredients we use are some of the most widely used and recognized names in hair-growth. We can also compound a progesterone or estrogen formula for those suffering hormone related hair loss.

Patient fear of needles can create an unnecessarily high level of stress and anxiety for both the patient and the dentist. Compounding medications allow for injection free anesthesia which allows the patient to rest easy during the dental procedure.

Disorders of the skin can be a problem among patients of all ages. Common problems include acne, scarring, rosacea, skin discoloration, psoriasis, and eczema. While many medications exist on the market, dermatology treatments can be expensive and many insurance plans may not cover them. A customized dermatology compounding formula specifically designed for treating these conditions is achievable, and also can reduce the common side effects of dryness, flaking, and peeling skin in patients who are on tretinoin, hydrooquinone, and other bleaching creams.

Using a compounding pharmacy for weight loss support means that supplements and weight loss medications are custom made to fit patient’s individual health needs. A compounding pharmacist can remove ingredients such as, gluten, dyes, sugar or other ingredients the patient’s body doesn’t tolerate. Moreover, a compounding pharmacist can combine many active ingredients into a sin gle supplement to ensure optimal results.

By combining the proper combination of active ingredients in the most appropriate base, compound wound medication can be formulated to provide optimum patient care. These combinations of active ingredients are not available commercially such as, pain relief with debridement, wound closure, scar and keloid formulas. With many different ingredient options to choose from, compounding leverages modern medical advancements to design and customize wound care with each patient in mind.

Whether you are treating a hard to dose companion animal, a 1,200 pound exotic beast or one that weighs only two pounds, we can provide a precision dose, dosage form, and custom flavor to meet the needs of the unique veterinary patient. Cats are notorious for refusing to swallow pills or a liquid medication and they’ll usually eat around medication hidden in food. We offer options to make it easier to medicate finicky pets like this using transdermal applicators which allows the medicine to be easily absorbed into the bloodstream without the pet or owner feeling unnecessary anxiety.
